Wismec Luxotic DF Squonk Kit Review

While we’ve seen a decrease in the popularity of dual-battery squonk mods recently, Wismec has decided it’s time for a comeback, with the new Luxotic DF Squonk Kit. This kit includes the latest Luxotic mod topped with the Guillotine RDA. Firing up to 200W and boasting a sleek new chassis, will the new Luxotic be enough to change people’s minds about squonking? Or will this iJoy subsidiary be unable to reinvigorate a less-than-energized subset of the market? Let’s find out with the experts over on YouTube.

Conclusion

So maybe the Luxotic didn’t exactly re-invent squonking from the ground up, but this kit is overall pretty decent. Reviews definitely had some variation between them, but it’s safe to say that if the Luxotic DF is interesting to you, it wouldn’t be a bad investment. Let’s break down the pros and cons, beginning, as always, with the negative side of things.

The biggest con, across the board, was the squonking system itself. While this might sound like a damning consensus, you’ve got to really understand what we hate about the system in particular. To qualify, the squonker works just fine – the issue is mostly with refilling. In order to re-fill your squonk bottle, you’ve basically got to break down the entire system. You have to remove the bottom plate, a side plate, remove the batteries, pull out the bottle, and then finally re-fill it. Not exactly a hassle-free solution, especially when squonking is supposed to be the less complicated way to use a dripper.

Other than that, you’ve got some more run-of-the-mill complaints. The offset 510 connection means that, despite the Luxotic’s size, you can only fit 24.5mm atomizers on top. Definitely a fair complaint, given that a dual-battery squonker is always going to be a sizeable mod. You also have some wobble on the battery cover, which can be annoying to some.

The aesthetics are a mixed bag, as well. Fortunately, you can just look at it yourself and choose if you like it or not, but there were definitely some strong opinions floated by our reviewers regarding the look of the Luxotic. Inarguably, for a product line which is supposed to be about “exotic” designs, the Luxotic doesn’t quite live up to that promise. The Ultem drip tip also does not match the system, regardless which color you get. For the more anal people out there, that could easily be a deal breaker.

The Luxotic DF isn’t all bad though. Reviewers all said you’re able to get great flavor off this kit. The RDA is a pretty solid device, offering a ton of airflow and relatively easy coil building.

Then, the device is actually pretty small. Naturally, we mentioned previously that a dual-battery squonk is always going to be somewhat large, but the Luxotic DF is probably the smallest device on the market in this category. By no means would it qualify as “super portable”, but being the smallest in class is certainly something of an achievement.

It’s also a comfortable, ergonomic, and well-built mod. Some minor looseness in the battery door aside, there’s hardly any rattle on any of its systems. The fire button is responsive and easy-to-find while the device’s heft lends it a quality feeling. In fact, there’s not a whole lot to complain about in regard to its systems. The menu is simple and straightforward, allowing you to fine-tune your wattage as much as you like. They also include two squonk bottles!

At the end of the day, this device is going out to a very small audience of people. In the history of dual-battery squonkers, there’s maybe only 15 on the market. Why? People just aren’t that into them. But if you are into these devices, there’s no strong reason why you should not pick this one up. The squonking system is less-than-ideal, but the rest of its issues are honestly pretty minor. If you squonk and you want a device which has longer battery life than your other mods and is still smaller than the rest, give the Luxotic DF a shot. If the minor grievances above are the kind of thing you’re going to zero in on, you want to pass.
