vaptio capt n review

So apparently Vaptio has decided to continue their questionable design choices with yet another superhero themed vape kit. After their spider and bat themed vapes, it’s now time for a Captain America vape. While not officially licensed by Marvel, one look at this kit and you’ll immediately understand the aesthetic they were going for. But, while we might not love what Vaptio is doing for the image of vaping as a whole, how does this kit vape? There’s a lot of things to be excited for, from its small form factor to Vaptio’s history of (inconsistently) delivering pretty excellent starter kits and mods. As always, however, there’s a lot of room to go wrong when putting together a starter kit, so let’s find out if this is Winter Soldier (classic) or the original Captain America (1990. Garbage).

Conclusion

So, there’s just about one thing that really hits home with this starter kit. That leaves you with one very good reason to buy it, but a bunch of reasons to take a hard pass on the Capt’n. Let’s get into the cons first and save the best for last.

Something we heard a lot about during these reviews was the “odd” flavor produced by the coils in the Capt’n Tank. It’s an odd situation, made all the more so when you consider that these are the same exact coils released alongside the Frogman Tank. In that tank, these coils tasted just fine. In this new tank, however, a lot of people are reporting a “strange” or “funky” flavor going on, to the point where the tank is essentially unusable. While one reviewer did not mention any peculiar flavors, his opinion on the flavor production was still just average at best.

Furthermore, the kit doesn’t include mesh coils. Even if, for some reason, you don’t happen to experience the “bottom of a shoe” type flavor described by Jai Haze, you’re likely to be disappointed by the round-wire coils this tank uses. In a day and age where everyone is using mesh, doing anything less is a puzzling and disappointing design flaw.

One more thing about the tank: You’re stuck with a proprietary, double o-ring drip tip. Due to its peculiar design, you’re never going to quite be able to get your other drip tips to fit on here. That’s pretty annoying, especially given that the included drip tip is really not that great.

Onto the design of the box mod itself. This is where the design really goes ham. You’ve got stars all over the place, no matter which color option you choose. You’ve also got a bright, brassy paint job which is a little bit much, even more the most die-hard Captain America fans.

On the functional side of things, the buttons aren’t exactly great. The firing button is okay, but the adjustment buttons are nearly flush with the device itself, making them extremely difficult to find and use.

While the design choices are annoying, the UI and chipset are even worse. The operating system used by the Capt’n is slow, laggy, and full of glitches. Vaptio also made a number of questionable decisions within the UI itself, by not grouping certain features together in a way that is standard practice and easiest for most vapers to navigate.

These issues aside, the only feature that really stands out is the impressive size and build of the box mod. The Vaptio Capt’n 220W Starter Kit is almost certainly the smallest dual 18650 box mod on the market today. This is honestly a pretty big selling point, especially for people for whom that is the number one priority over all things.

It’s also built very well. There’s no button rattle when you move it around, there’s no issues with the battery door, and the entire device just feels incredible in the hand. For a system with a lot of issues, this is something that’s so hard to get right for a lot of companies, so it’s definitely worth giving them credit.

Final Thoughts

There’s a couple things we need to touch on before we head out. First, the tank seems to be a complete waste of money. Maybe yours won’t come with that bizarre aftertaste issue, but it’s not worth taking the risk without some sort of statement from Vaptio explaining what happened and what they’ve done to remedy the issue. The second part of this first point is that, since this tank is garbage, the entire kit is not worth your time or money, period. Once the two pieces are sold separately, it’s time to consider our second point, which is: the Capt’n mod is unsurpassed in terms of ergonomics and portability. If your main priority in a box mod is its size and ergonomics, the box mod itself is well worth your money once you can buy it without the tank. For anybody else, however, the entire Capt’n line is one to ignore.
